EDMONDS — A man surrendered to authorities unhurt Saturday evening after a five-hour standoff that started with reports that he was barricaded inside an apartment with a handgun and ended after police shot at him, Edmonds police said.
A SWAT officer opened fire after the man pointed a gun at officers, according to the Edmonds Police Department Twitter feed. The man gave himself up a few minutes later.
Snohomish County’s Multiple Agency Response Team was called to investigate.
The commotion on the 20900 block of 76th Avenue West, near College Place Middle School, started around 2:30 p.m.
Patrol officers went there after a man who lives in the apartment reported that a former co-worker from years earlier had shown up, started smashing things, then locked him out of his own home, police Sgt. Shane Hawley said. When officers arrived, the man went to the door with a handgun, then retreated inside.
Authorities evacuated nearby homes before SWAT members arrived and attempted negotiations, Hawley said. The man was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m.
