LYNNWOOD — Five people lost their homes Sunday morning after a fire broke out at a four-plex in an unincorporated area near Lake Stickney, Snohomish County Fire District 1 reported.

Dispatchers received the first 911 calls around 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters could see a column of black smoke from miles away as they approached the scene on the 1700 block of Madison Way, fire district spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said. When they arrived, a shed and an attic were engulfed in flames.

All occupants escaped safely, Hynes said. Firefighters from Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Everett and District 7 assisted in bringing the flames under control in about 20 minutes. No one was injured.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that the fire was an accident sparked by a generator running inside the shed attached to the building, Hynes said.

Aid groups were assisting the displaced people.
