The family gathered for Diana Bushnell’s 80th birthday in 2015. Daniel Bushnell, of Lake Stevens, is in the center, behind his mom, with his arms around two sisters.

We asked readers to tell us what they love about their moms. Kids from 17 to well over 70 entered The Herald’s Mother’s Day contest. The winner received a $100 gift card to Renee’s Contemporary Clothing in Everett. But there were many other heartfelt stories. You can find all of them here.

Son: Daniel W. Bushnell, Lake Stevens

Mom: Diana J. Bushnell, Everett

My mother is a very strong woman. I love how my mother didn’t seem frazzled when raising us 10 children (eight boys and two girls). Five teenagers at a time for many years. My mother calmed my dad after his recurring nightmares of being shot down over China during World War II. Mom is the one who taught other people’s children all day, then came home to make dinner and help us with our homework.

Mom was the strong one when my sister’s 14-year-old daughter (and her namesake) was killed in a car accident. My mother did her best to hold it together when she watched a drunk driver run over my little brother as he was on the side of the road (he lived). It was her whose house burned to the ground as she was in the hospital at my father’s side when he took his last breath. Mom’s the one who lost her husband after 55 years and came home to ashes.

My mother is an amazing woman who has never complained about her life and has never received an award for what she has done for us and our country.
