Front Porch: Can they graduate?

The Washington State Board of Education meeting today at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma is set to include a discussion about changing state graduation requirements.

The potential changes would keep the state-mandated number of credits to 20 but change the allocation of those credits and the definition of the current 150-hour credit requirement.

Final rules changes are scheduled to be reviewed by the board in November and take effect for the graduating class of 2016.

Ranching on a small scale: Those interested in small-acreage farming and ranching can sign up for a series of courses scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesdays starting Tuesday at WSU Snohomish County Extension‘s Cougar Auditorium, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Weekly presentations include local growers, organizations and university specialists with expertise in direct marketing, value-added processing, production planning, agronomy and livestock production.

In addition, two Saturday field trips will visit nearby farms to learn about different styles of successful small-farm enterprises.

Class size is limited. Cost for the 12-week course is $275 per farm or family. Registration is required.

Norwegian pancake feed: A Norwegian Pancake Breakfast is planned for 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 2111 117th Ave. NE in Lake Stevens.

It costs $5 at the door; children younger than 4 eat for free.
