Camano: Fire station under construction
A mostly new $1.8 million Terry’s Corner Fire Station is under construction and is being built on its old foundation.
The funding comes from a bond approved by voters in the Camano Island Fire and Rescue District in 2007, as well as from s
tate and federal grants.
Most of the old building was found to be seismically unsafe and too expensive to save, fire district officials said. During construction, one fire engine used by volunteers will be housed in the maintenance facility at Terry’s Corner. The 24-hour crews are moved to the Vista Madrona Station, which will serve the north end of Camano and Stanwood.
The majority of the $10 million bond approved by voters helped to fund the seismic upgrades and remodels of the Country Club and Terry’s Corner fire stations and construction of the new Madrona Station. The district also used the funds to augment water supply capabilities in the south part of the island by installing a water tank and purchasing a water tender for the Mabana Station.
Lake Stevens: Volunteers needed
The Lake Stevens Family Center currently has two volunteer positions open.
One is on the Community Accountability Board, a youth diversion program that gives youths younger than 18 the chance to make personal and community restitution for misdemeanor crimes and avoid a criminal record. The board meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of every month.
Another opening is on the Advisory Board, or Leadership Council for the Family Support Center. Meetings are held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

Marysville: Writing class for children
The Marysville Parks and Recreation Department plans to offer a creative writing class for children ages 8 to 12.
The class, taught by writer Crystal Linn, is scheduled to meet on Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. beginning July 6 through July 13. Cost of the class at the Ken Baxter Community Center is $34 plus a $3 supply fee.

Junk in the Trunk sale planned for July 9
Marysville Parks and Recreation is planning a Junk in the Trunk sale July 9 at the parking lot of Marysville Municipal Court, 1015 State Ave.
Vendors can complete an application for a parking spot in the lot to sell antiques, vintage items, crafts, garage sale goods and flea market stuff from their vehicle’s trunk. The sale is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cars and trucks cost $25 to register.

Coffee klatsch with the mayor on July 14
Marysville residents can have coffee with Mayor Jon Nehring on July 14.
The coffee klatsch is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Ken Baxter Community Center, 514 Delta Ave.
While topics during the occasional meetings are generally as open and varied as residents want to talk about, Nehring hopes to get ideas and comments about a neighborhood enhancement program. The new award program would recognize a homeowner and block or neighborhood for visual attractiveness and landscaping improvements, as well as a business award for street-side appeal.
Register by 5 p.m. July 8.
