MARYSVILLE — Snohomish took over first place in Wesco North with a 5-0 win over Marysville Pilchuck Monday night at Marysville Pilchuck High School. According to Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey, its the first time in the previous three years that his Panther team has beat Marysville Pilchuck. The teams have had a number of close battles, he said, and lost in penalty kicks to the Tomahawks in this year’s previous meeting. But despite all of that, the win came as no surprise to the head coach.
“We’ve been settling in the last eight to nine games,” Pingrey said. “Tonight the boys settled in, and played within themselves.”
The game was scoreless right up until the half, when in the 38th minute, Reilly Cross scored on a Trevor Barton assist. Barton opened the second half with a 45th-minute score, assisted on a long pass from goalkeeper Brenden George. Bryson White scored the Panthers’ third goal in the 58th minute, on an assist from Cross.
John Jaeger scored the final two goals for Snohomish in the 76th and 78th minutes. Jaeger, usually a defender, chipped in the second goal from the 30-yard line, up and over a charging Ian Beegle, Marysville-Pilchuck’s goalkeeper who shared time in goal with the Tomahawks’ starter Kyle Bluhm.
Snohomish will play its final game against Lake Stevens on Wednesday night, a team that gave Snohomish a 2-1 loss earlier this year.
“(We’ve) still got to take care of business for one more match. If we trip up, we find ourselves back in second or third,” said Pingrey, who then added that games with Lake Stevens are usually an “annual battle.”
Brenden George got the shutout in goal for Snohomish, now 10-4 in league and 10-5 overall. Marysville Pilchuck drops to 10-4 in conference, 11-4 overall.
