All safe after house fire in Mukilteo

MUKILTEO — A candle is blamed for causing a house fire in Mukilteo on Sunday morning, according to the Mukilteo Fire Department.

One resident suffered minor injuries, and the fire was contained to a bedroom in a duplex in the 13500 block of Beverly Park Road.

A candle had been left burning on a nightstand, and shortly before 6 a.m., one of the home’s residents woke up with hair on fire, according to a news release from the department.

Everyone in the house got out, and called 911.

Within a few minutes, the first firefighters arrived and started attacking the flames in the bedroom.

Nineteen firefighters from Mukilteo and Lynnwood fire departments, and Fire District 1 responded.

Paramedics treated and released one resident with minor injuries at the scene, according to the news release.

Snohomish County Fire Investigator ruled the fire was an accident sparked by the candle burning in the bedroom. The fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damages to the home and residents’ belongings.

While candles might seem harmless, they can cause fires, injuries and even deaths, cautioned Mukilteo Assistant Fire Chief Brian McMahan in the news release. “This is an open flame which makes things easy to ignite if not handed and cared for properly.”
