74-year-old woman accused of firing stolen gun in Stanwood neighborhood

EVERETT — A 74-year-old woman allegedly held her neighbors at gunpoint and fired a shot during an argument in Stanwood on Wednesday night. 

Deputies with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office responded before 7 p.m. to a home off 80th Drive NW after a man reported that his neighbor shot at his dog and was holding multiple people at gunpoint, according to an arrest affidavit.

Once on scene, multiple deputies were needed to take the woman into custody after she allegedly didn’t comply with law enforcement, court documents said.

During a search, deputies found the woman had a loaded Smith and Wesson revolver in her pocket with one spent shell and 20 additional unfired bullets on her, according to court documents.

Three victims reportedly told investigators the woman fired her gun outside, then pointed the gun at the group when they went to see what was going on, deputies said.

She allegedly told the group to “stay where you are” or she would “shoot them,” arrest documents said.

Deputies learned the gun she used was reported stolen from Georgia after searching the weapon’s serial number in a national and state database. The woman also allegedly hid the loaded gun in her pocket, despite not having a concealed carry license, deputies said.

After her arrest, the woman told deputies she fired the gun straight into the air to stop the neighbors from charging at her, according to court documents. She claimed the neighbors were armed and had threatened her, but that they must have hid the guns before deputies arrived.

The woman has no previous criminal record, according to documents filed by the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office.

A judge found probable cause for three counts of second-degree assault, as well as one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm, court records said. Her preliminary bail was set at $100,000.
