House OKs homeless student data bill

OLYMPIA — The House has passed a measure that would have the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction gather data on the number of homeless students enrolled in the state’s public schools.

House Bill 2373 passed on a 92-4 vote and now heads to the Senate. Under the measure, OSPI would report the data to Gov. Jay Inslee and the Legislature by Jan. 10 and in future odd-numbered years.

The agency would also be charged with reporting other information relating to homeless students, including dropout rates in grades 7 through 12. Under the measure, by July 1, OSPI must adopt and distribute to each school district recommendations on choosing and training district-designated homeless student liaisons.
