Tom Hoban, CEO of Everett-based Coast Group of Companies, which includes commercial brokerage firm Coast/Sperry Van Ness, was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award at the national Sperry Van Ness conference in San Diego this month. Hoban, with brother Shawn Hoban, founded the first of the companies 25 years ago.

KeyBank has promoted Aspasia Sotiriou to area retail leader. In this role, she will manage operations at 11 branches in the Snohomish County area. Since joining KeyBank in 1997, Sotiriou has been a teller, assistant branch manager, branch manager and district operations manager. Most recently, she was project manager for KeyBank’s branch expansion projects.

Kudos

The Everett-based syndicated radio show, “Talk About Cars,” has been selected as the Best Automotive Radio Program for 2012 by the Automotive Journalism Society of North America. The program is hosted, produced and syndicated in-house by Jeff Shade and can be heard on KRKO-AM (1380) Saturdays at 10 a.m. For information about the show, email info@talkaboutcars.net.

At the recent 2012 Beta Alpha Psi Regional Conference, University of Washington Bothell won one competition, “Dealing with Change,” and came in second in another, “Thinking Outside of the Box.” The winning team will compete in the national Beta Alpha Psi competition in Baltimore in August. Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial-information students and professionals. This year’s event was hosted by UW Bothell.

Events

Snohomish Station Animal Hospital, a new veterinary facility, will host a community pet adoption event and block party May 12. The event will run from noon to 3 p.m. in the parking area surrounding the hospital at 2705 Bickford Ave., Building 5, Suite A, in Snohomish. The public is invited to attend this free event, which will also feature free food, raffles and prizes. BECU will celebrate the grand opening of a new neighborhood financial center at 16310 Bothell-Everett Highway in Mill Creek at noon on Thursday. Representatives from the Mill Creek Business Association, Mill Creek City Council and Mill Creek Mayor Mike Todd will be on hand for a ribbon-cutting. The new 2,300-square-foot location has six consultant desks, two ATMs with 24-hour access and two online banking kiosks.

Harbour Pointe Retirement Community will offer free document shredding and cell phone recycling from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19. The fourth annual Women’s Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Camano Center, 606 Arrowhead Road on Camano Island. Admission is free. Economists will discuss the Pacific Northwest economy at the 2012 Pacific Northwest Regional Economic Conference on May 17-18 at the Westin Hotel in Seattle. The Bothell office of the state Department of Revenue is hosting a free workshop for new and small business owners from 1 to 4:30 p.m. May 10 at the Everett Public Library. Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales-tax collection and record-keeping requirements. NW Plus Credit Union has opened a full service office in the Safeway Plaza at Lake Stevens. The new office has full-time hours and a drive-through window and has a consumer loan officer on staff. A mortgage loan officer is available by appointment. Branch hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 6 p.m. Friday.

AEG Facilities has named Tulalip Resort Casino as the exclusive casino and resort partner of KeyArena at Seattle Center. The partnership includes rights to the southwest concourse corner in the arena, which will feature a casino-style display with gaming features and discounts at Tulalip Resort Casino.

Northwest Multiple Listing Service has unveiled mobile applications to enable brokers to quickly navigate the MLS system using iPads, iPhones or Android devices, with a BlackBerry app to be added soon. The new tool allows MLS broker members to search for listings around them by using a device’s GPS. Only members of Northwest MLS will have access to the tool, which is offered to members as an optional subscription.

The City of Bothell was a recipient of $500,000 to fund a project for the Bothell Med Tech Manufacturing Innovation Partnership Zone. This is its second $500,000 grant for this purpose. The state construction budget funds local workforce development and infrastructure projects, creating an estimated 18,000 jobs statewide.

Sound Community Bank will launch the MoneyIsland program May 1. This educational online world helps children 8-14 learn about finance in a fun way. Topics include saving and spending, earning and investing and using credit wisely. Anyone interested in enrolling an individual child or group can contact Sound Community Bank.

According to the Smith Travel Research Report for March, Snohomish County ended the month up 3 percent in hotel-motel occupancy over the previous year and finished the month at 64.1 percent.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and U.S. Small Business Administration have new resources to support small businesses. Money Smart for Small Business is a training curriculum for new and aspiring business owners. The program is free and available at www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/ moneysmart/index.html.
