With aircraft deliveries on the rise, the Boeing Co. plans to put in a new jet delivery center in Everett.
“We need to be able to have a larger facility,” said Elizabeth Fischtziur, spokeswoman for the Boeing’s Everett site.
The company’s existing delivery center, which was renovated in 2006, will be torn down later this year. Boeing will open the new facility, which is still in the planning stages, in 2013, she said.
“We’ve simply outgrown the existing delivery center,” Fischtziur said.
Fischtziur said the company has a plan for the deliveries that will take place in the time it takes to build a new center. Those deliveries include Boeing’s first 787, which is to be handed over in the third quarter of this year. Ultimately, Boeing plans to build at least seven 787s monthly at its Everett facility and three more monthly at its South Carolina site. Deliveries of the company’s first 747-8 freighter and passenger models also are expected to take place this year.
Across Paine Field from Boeing is the Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour facility, which already has been the spot for several aircraft delivery ceremonies, including the first 777 freighter. Boeing has parked several of its 787s outside the Future of Flight until the company begins rework on those aircraft.
In the meantime, the delivery center employees will be moved over to the facility that Boeing has leased from Aviation Technical Services, a maintenance, repair and overhaul company at Paine Field. Fischtziur declined to say how many employees would be affected in the move. Boeing said last year that it would lease the ATS site to complete work on 787s that it has built but can’t deliver without incorporating changes from problems discovered in flight testing.
