EVERETT — Who doesn’t want to be 21?

It’s the age that inspired the fashions of rue21, which offers low-cost fashions for teens and young adults. It will open a shop in the Everett Mall next month.

“It’s one of those exciting categories of retailers” that is seeing growth, said Julie Tennyson, the mall’s marketing director.

In addition to the Everett store, the retailer plans to open in Lakewood in Pierce County and in Wenatchee. It also will open four stores in Oregon in the coming weeks. The Everett Mall location is scheduled to open April 2.

“The Northwest market is an exciting opportunity that will potentially give us 60 new store openings in Washington and Oregon in the next five years,” said Bob Fisch, president and chief executive of rue21, inc.

Currently, rue21 has 450 locations in 41 states.

The local rue21 store will be located near the Payless Shoe store in the Everett Mall, Tennyson said. That’s in the same wing as the now-closed Steve &Barry’s store. The mall has yet to find a new tenant for the space formerly occupied by Steve &Barry’s, a low-cost clothing retailer that liquidated its stores nationwide in January.

In addition to young women and men’s apparel and fragrances, rue21’s 4,500-square foot Everett Mall location will feature rue21 etc. — a distinct department carrying accessories, such as shoes, jewelry and handbags.

“Welcoming a new retailer to the mix is always exciting, but even more so when the retailer is in such high demand from our teen shoppers,” Tennyson said. “Rue21 does an amazing job on their stores, and I think customers will be impressed when they see the new location at Everett Mall.”

The retailer joins a growing selection of strong teen retailers at the mall, such as Old Navy, Wet Seal, PacSun, Aeropostale, Hot Topic, Zumiez, Finish Line and Journeys.
