Is it harder to land a job if you’re unemployed?

For the unemployed, the word “no” takes on a cruel nature. No, we’re not hiring. No, you didn’t make the last round of interviews.
No, we’re not looking at candidates who aren’t currently employed.
That last one might shock you. But CNN Money has a story today that shows how some employers are saying just that.
The fear seems to be that the applicant may have been let go for performance issues. But in a down economy, that’s often not the case.

“Most executive recruiters won’t look at a candidate unless they have a job, even if they don’t like to admit to it,” Lisa Chenofsky Singer, a human resources consultant from New Jersey, told CNN Money.
Some aren’t so shy about admitting it, though it seems job listings becomes a bit more vaguely worded after reporters start asking questions.
Unemployment is still a big problem for most states, including Washington. Last week, the governor urged employers to take advantage of tax credits available to companies that hire unemployed workers.
