Great plant pick: Rooguchi clematis
Published 8:33 am Wednesday, July 11, 2012
WHAT: The Rooguchi clematis has delicate flower bells of indigo violet and soft green leaves from early summer to fall on this charming, nontwining vine.
WHY PLANT IT: Plant vines that are well rooted and at least 2 years old. With training it will gently clamber through open shrubs or on a trellis, and it also does well in a container.
WHERE: Plant in full sun or light to open shade in rich well-drained soil. Give it regular watering. This clematis dies back to the ground every winter and blooms on new growth in the summer. Cut last season’s vines back to 4 to 6 inches tall in late winter
SIZE: This clematis grows about 8 feet in length, which makes it an ideal vine for tight situations. It will spread about 3 feet.
