Herbs and spices aren’t just for cooking.

They can help treat common maladies, including sore throats, earaches, nausea, constipation, acne, hemorrhoids, hangovers, headaches and cold sores. They can also help heal minor injuries such as burns and cuts.

Learn the art and science of making your own natural medicines with “Simple Home Remedies from Ayurveda,” a two-day continuing education class at Bastyr University, 14500 Juanita Drive NE, Kenmore.

Vasant Lad, author of “The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies” and founder of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., will help students identify essential herbs and household items to make some of the ancient medicines of India.

Hours for the intensive weekend class, which costs $345, will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 25 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 26. Go to www.bastyr.edu/continuinged or call 425-602-3152 to register.
