EVERETT — A burn ban covering fireplaces and outdoor recreational fires began Sunday afternoon for all of Snohomish County.
Without wind to push in clear air, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency announced the ban Sunday morning. It remains in effect indefinitely.
The burn ban is intended to cut the amount of pollution, usually from wood smoke, that makes air unhealthy.
Air quality was moderate in Snohomish County, but expected to worsen to unhealthy for sensitive groups as cold temperatures remained and the weather stayed stagnant, according to the agency.
Wood-burning fireplaces, uncertified wood stoves and fireplace inserts may not be used, unless there is a previously approved exemption from the agency.
Certified wood stoves and inserts, as well as pellet stoves, natural gas and propane stoves or inserts are allowed.
Outdoor fires are banned.
Violations carry a $1,000 penalty.
