Bail set at $1M for Everett man in shootout that left brother injured

The suspect, 26, had been threatening to shoot a former friend before opening fire at an Everett duplex, police wrote.

EVERETT — A judge set bail at $1 million Monday for an Everett man accused of shooting at a home with children in it in a shootout that left his brother with a gunshot wound to the neck.

Police arrested the suspect, 27, on Friday afternoon for investigation of first-degree assault and drive-by shooting. Investigators suspect the shootout was the result of a gang conflict. A juvenile suspect was also taken into custody.

On Thursday, the suspect had been sending messages to a former friend, threatening to shoot him, Everett detective Colby Droullard wrote in a police report. The friend told the suspect he did not want any trouble, and offered to meet at a park to settle any issues.

The next morning, the friend went to the home of the suspect’s mom in north Everett, Droullard wrote. The suspect was not there, but sent a message threatening to shoot the friend at a duplex, in the 9800 block of 18th Avenue W., where the friend lived with his girlfriend and a child.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, security footage showed a black Honda pulling into the driveway, the police report read. Gunshots and glass breaking could reportedly be heard on the footage. A person got out of the car and ran into the backyard. The suspect emerged from the driver’s seat and shot at the duplex with a rifle, according to the report.

Inside the house, the friend was upstairs with his girlfriend and their child when the shooting began, according to the report. The girlfriend returned fire with a pistol before taking their child into the bedroom closet. She later told investigators the suspect had been in their home before and knew the layout.

She and the child were not injured.

The suspect’s brother got out of the driver’s side of the Honda and “quickly fell to the ground,” Droullard wrote. The security footage showed the suspect appear to drag his brother on the ground and load him into the back seat. They drove away.

Two miles north of the scene, sheriff’s deputies pulled over the Honda at 4th Avenue and 128th Street, where they found a man with a suspected gunshot wound to the neck. Two others in the car, one identified as the suspect, fled on foot, according to police. Officers booked a suspect into the Snohomish County Jail around 8 p.m. Friday.

The suspect’s brother was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with an injury that was not considered life-threatening. This week, it was unclear if he had been released.

On Monday, Commissioner Jennifer Millett set bail at $1 million for the suspect in Everett District Court. He remained behind bars this week.
