GOLD BAR — Search and rescue crews found the body of a woman Saturday morning near Wallace Falls, the Snohomish County sheriff’s office announced Monday.
The woman, 25, of New Jersey, had been hiking with a friend on Friday. Around 8 p.m. that night, the friend reportedly told park rangers she and the New Jersey woman were separated on the trail and she wasn’t sure where the woman was.
Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies, search and rescue and fire crews could not find the missing woman that night, wrote sheriff’s spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe.
Searchers returned to the trail Saturday morning and found the woman’s body downriver from the Wallace Falls trail. Crews used a drone to find the body in the river around 9 a.m., O’Keefe said, not too far from the trail.
“It is believed the two hikers were under the influence of mushrooms,” O’Keefe wrote. “The death appears to be accidental.”
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm the identity of the woman and determine her cause and manner of death.
