BARING — Fire crews have contained about 71% of the Bolt Creek fire, which grew to over 10,000 acres by Sunday morning.
Baring and Grotto residents could return home Saturday if they showed identification proving residency in the area. Officials urged caution for those going home as firefighters worked from highway and roads.
But the U.S. 2 remained closed to other travelers from the east side of Money Creek Road to the west side of 5th Street in Skykomish.
Falling rocks and trees and unstable debris are hazards on the steep terrain in the wake of the fire. Crews are trying to find and remove them.
Firefighters are focusing on keeping the fire from spreading east and west, and holding it north of the highway away from infrastructure and residences.
Residents are asked to pay attention, stay inside and let firefighters keep working.
