A burst pipe flooded part of the new Student Fitness Center at Everett Community College on Monday, sending water into a second-story conference room, then down into first-floor locker rooms.
The pipe froze after a malfunction in the building’s heating and cooling system, said Pat Sisneros, vice president of College Services. Officials are still looking into why that happened.
“We were surprised this happened with this particular piece of equipment,” he said.
The leak was quickly discovered by the building manager, who was nearby when the pipe burst.
Sisneros didn’t yet know how much clean up costs will tally.
The college expects the contractor will pick up the bill, since the building is still under warranty.
The 49,000-square-foot Student Fitness Center is located off Broadway, near the Everett Transit Center’s College Station and EvCC’s main campus. The center opened in January.
