Heart screenings take on personal meaning for volunteersVolunteers from Lynnwood Fire and Fire District 1 had a personal interest in participating in a Feb. 12 Nick of Time Foundation event at Meadowdale High School, which offered heart screenings to youth in memory of Matthew Truax. The two departments were among those who responded Sept. 13 when Truax, a Meadowdale junior, collapsed during physical education class after suffering sudden cardiac arrest.

Medic Dan Grantier had wanted to volunteer with the Mill Creek-based nonprofit before. “But it all became much more urgent” after that 911 call, Grantier recalled.

“When Nick to Time organized a screening at Meadowdale High School in honor of that student, I felt that getting a group of firefighters and medics from the Lynnwood Fire Department and Fire District 1 would be a good way to express our support for the parents of that student and try and make a difference for other students in our community who may be at risk of the same,” Grantier said.

Emergency room staff at Swedish/Edmonds, who also had attempted to revive Truax that day, were expected to be among the volunteers at the screening event.

In all, 555 youth received screenings, a record one-day number for the foundation. That day, the foundation screened its 10,000th young person, Grantier said.

“They are doing yeoman’s work in protecting the youth in the Puget Sound area from catastrophic cardiac events,” Grantier said.
