MONROE — Four cows died in a crash that closed U.S. 2 in both directions Friday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Around 4 a.m., a herd of cows escaped from a nearby farm, state trooper Kelsey Harding said. They were hit by a car just west of Fryelands Boulevard in Monroe. Four were killed. The others were uninjured.
The driver was not injured.
Authorities shut down the highway, according to an alert from the state Department of Transportation.
By 8 a.m., all lanes had reopened.
Troopers do not suspect impairment played a role in the crash, Harding said. No arrests were made.
