BAKER CITY, Ore. — Authorities say a 91-year-old Baker City man and his 89-year-old brother survived a night in the cold after their sport utility vehicle slid off a groomed snowmobile trail.
Leonard and Lloyd Pohl were reported missing Wednesday afternoon when they did not return from a sightseeing trip. Searchers could not find the pair until Lloyd Pohl walked out to Highway 7 near Union Creek Campground on Thursday.
Police Chief Wyn Lohner said Pohl waived his hat to get the attention of a passer-by who stopped to help.
The city then dispatched two snowmobiles to get Leonard Pohl. City workers found the older brother sitting under a tree 200 yards from the vehicle.
The brothers spent the night in the SUV, running the engine occasionally for warmth. They declined treatment and returned home.
The city workers pulled the SUV out of the snow and drove it back to town.
