The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 14 recognized Elizabeth Sajan, a fifth-grader at St. Mary Magdalen School in Everett, for her outstanding work to promote and protect bees and other pollinators.
Elizabeth’s project is among 15 student projects from 13 states to receive the 2016 President’s Environmental Youth Award for their environmental education and stewardship achievements.
After learning about pollination and the importance of bees, Elizabeth embarked on an independent project she called “Bee Happy We Happy.” Her research led her to create an awareness flyer that she distributed throughout the community, encouraging such bee-friendly actions as planting certain flowers, keeping “weeds,” becoming a beekeeper, reducing pesticide use, and including water sources in a garden.
