EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy says she won’t run for re-election after 12 years in the job.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports Piercy is 72 and wants to spend more time with her husband. She’s been working full time for a decade.
Her election as mayor in 2004 marked the beginning of a period of liberal dominance on the City Council.
She’s been re-elected twice, and her tenure will be second-longest among Eugene mayors.
Piercy said she’s proud of downtown revitalization, repaved streets, a new sustainability commission, a local ordinance to cut carbon emissions, a policy of denser development and what she calls “moving forward” through a difficult recession.
The Register-Guard says a half-dozen people are considering running to succeed her, and more candidates may emerge.
