EVERETT — A man accused of robbing an Everett bank on Thursday afternoon was arrested when he returned hours later to retrieve some of the cash he had dropped.
The Mukilteo man, 34, was being held Friday at the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery.
The holdup was reported just before 3 p.m. Thursday at the KeyBank at 1902 110th St SE. A man in a black sweatshirt demanded money and ran away with more than $7,800.
The bank teller put a dye pack in the loot. It exploded as the man was fleeing. The explosion started a fire in his bag that spread to his jacket, according to a police report. He threw the smoking bag into the bushes.
Later that night, witnesses said the suspect was back and looking in the bushes for the bag.
When he was arrested, he allegedly smelled like fire and had smudges on his hands, police wrote. He denied any involvement in the robbery.
