Everett boy Dominic Gonzalez, 3, donned a purple cape as he served as Ambassador for the 2018 March of Dimes Snohomish County March for Babies, held April 21 at Legion Memorial Park in Everett. The nonprofit’s largest annual benefit has raised nearly $100,000 to help moms and babies. The goal is $150,000. Donations can still be made at marchforbabies.org/event/snohomish.

DeAnna and Jarin Gonzalez were excited to welcome a boy after having three girls. There were complications, however, and Dominic was born almost six weeks prematurely. The umbilical cord had been wrapped around his legs, causing his heart rate to drop each time he kicked.

“Today, we have a thriving, joyful, smart 3-year-old boy because of our fantastic nurses and doctors at Providence Pavilion and the research, funded by March of Dimes, that gave us the surfactant treatment — the steroid shots — which helped Dominic’s underdeveloped lungs breathe when he was born,” DeAnna Gonzalez said.
