Front Porch: Clear up that DUI fine

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is offering a big break to people who participated in a DUI special detention program between 1999 and 2004 and still haven’t paid their bill.
Program participants have until June 30 to clear up penalties by paying $50 — the original cost of the detention program that allowed defendants to spend one day at Camp Evergreen listening to a victims panels in lieu of serving a day in jail. The program was operated by the county corrections department, which is now part of the sheriff’s office.
About 700 people never paid the $50 fee. The total amount they owe is much higher now after fines and penalties. Once the $50 payment is received, collection agencies will be notified to stop all attempts to collect on the outstanding debt.
Payments can be made by money order or certified check only (no personal checks), and mailed to: DUI Program, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau, 3000 Rockefeller Ave. M/S 509, Everett, WA 98201.
