FYI: Things to do when floodwaters recede

Here are some health tips to consider if your home got wet:

If you suspect that your well has been flooded, do not drink the water until the well has been tested and decontaminated.

Septic tank systems that have been flooded should not be used. After waters have receded, check the system for broken lines or overflowing sewage. Correct any problems before using the system.

Discard food, medicines and cosmetics that were not in water-tight containers and that were exposed to floodwaters. Disinfect watertight containers that were exposed to floodwaters.

Discard all milk, fish, meat, poultry and eggs if refrigeration failed and the temperature exceeded 41 degrees.

Do not turn on any flooded electric appliance because it may cause a shock, overheat or start a fire.

Donate goods for Everett fire victims

Donations of food, clothing and household items (no large appliances) for victims of the Jan. 3 apartment fire in the 3100 block of Lombard Avenue in Everett will be accepted at the Goodwill Industries Store at 3002 Hoyt Ave., Everett.

Take goods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

All items must be in good condition. Any leftover items will be accepted by Goodwill.

Cash donations given to the fire relief coordinator will go to the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross for the 21 adults and nine children who were displaced.

Stanwood High School senior Tara Smith, who has an autistic brother, has organized a silent auction and benefit concert as part of her senior project.

The concert at the high school’s performing arts center and will likely be rescheduled for a date over the next two weeks, Smith said.
