LYNNWOOD — Lynnwood police are giving people another way to report some types of nonviolent crimes besides calling 911.
The department recently launched a reporting system on the department’s Web site at www.ci.lynnwood.wa.us/police. There’s a link on the site to file a report.
Officers still prefer to respond in person, but sometimes crime victims aren’t able to wait for an officer to arrive, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said.
The online system is for nonviolent and low-priority offenses such as reporting an abandoned vehicle, graffiti and theft from a car.
People answer a series of questions and are then notified that their report is being reviewed.
Police officers will review the cases daily. Once the report is reviewed, it will be assigned a case number. A copy of the report will be e-mailed to the victim, who can print the report for their records or for insurance purposes.
If the police need to do additional investigating, they will contact the reporting party, Sessions said.
Some reports may be rejected if they don’t meet online reporting criteria. And filing a false police report is against the law and could result in jail time.
Sessions reminds people to call 911 for any emergency.
