PROSSER — A 76-year-old man accused of hitting an autistic boy in the Richland library appeared in Benton County District Court on a misdemeanor assault charge.
The case against Frank Teverbaugh was continued Wednesday to December to give his lawyer more time.
The Tri-City Herald reports Teverbaugh is accused of striking a 7-year-old boy who was having a “meltdown” — kicking and screaming — on Aug. 14 as his mother and caretaker were trying to take him outside.
The mother says Teverbaugh backhanded her son, giving him a bloody nose, and then hit him a second time on the back.
The retired coach says he did not hit the boy in the face, but only tried to swat the boy on the rear after the boy struck him first.
