Man arrested in shooting during altercation in Olympia

OLYMPIA — Olympia Police say a 46-year-old driver has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a pedestrian during an altercation at an intersection.

Police spokesman Lt. Paul Lower says Michael Volz was arrested Tuesday and booked into Thurston County Jail on investigation of first-degree assault.

The argument happened Monday night between the 20-year-old pedestrian and the driver over who had the right-of-way.

Police says the pedestrian struck the vehicle’s hood with his hand and went to the passenger side of the vehicle where witnesses believe he used his skateboard to strike the door and break the window. The driver pulled out a handgun and shot the pedestrian once.

Police say the pedestrian is in stable condition and recovering at a local hospital. The bullet struck him in the elbow and traveled through his arm and into his chest.
