DARRINGTON — A man in his late 50s collapsed and died while hiking a trail off the Mountain Loop Highway on Saturday afternoon, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Authorities were in the process of recovering his body shortly before 7 p.m., sheriff’s Lt. Todd Swenson said.
Another hiker had flagged down a first responder on his way home from a training exercise at the Big Four Ice Caves, Swenson said. The man said his hiking partner had fallen unconscious on the trail after experiencing labored breathing.
The incident occurred about 8 miles toward Darrington from Barlow Pass.
