GOLD BAR — A kayaker died on the Skykomish River on Saturday afternoon.
He and a friend were going through Boulder Drop, a set of Class 4 rapids between Gold Bar and Index, when he went beneath the water.
By the time his friend pulled the man onto the riverbank, he was unconscious.
The friend applied CPR for about a half hour, unsuccessfully, before hiking about a mile to where he could get a cellphone and call 911, Gold Bar fire Lt. Brandon Vargas said.
“His friend did everything he could,” Vargas said.
Gold Bar firefighters and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office responded at 1:40 p.m. Late Saturday afternoon they were still working to retrieve the victim’s body.
Vargas said both men were experienced kayakers.
