GRANITE FALLS — Rescue teams were trying to recover the body of a man Monday who fell in the south fork of the Stillaguamish River while hiking in Granite Falls.
Around 5 p.m. Sunday, a man in his early 20s was hiking with a group at the Granite Falls Fish Ladder near the Mountain Loop Highway. Witnesses saw the man venture out to a rocky area off the trail to get a better view of the river. He fell off the smooth rocks into the water below, Granite Falls Assistant Fire Chief Bill Dane said.
Crews from Granite Falls, Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue, the Stillaguamish Water Rescue Team and Snohomish County Search and Rescue looked for the man. After spending 70 minutes searching between the fish ladder and Jordan Road, the teams switched to a recovery effort, Dane said.
Dane said that part of the river is “very treacherous” and even the most experienced kayakers don’t try to traverse it.
Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office dive teams were at the scene Monday trying to recover the man’s body.
