Everett and Edmonds will mark the holiday with a church service, parade and other programs Sunday and Monday.

EVERETT — Opportunities are available Sunday and Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. Here are some local events planned for the national holiday.

Sunday celebration

On Sunday, the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee will hold a service as part of its annual Greater Everett Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration. The service will be held 3-5 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller Ave., in Everett. Music and speakers will include a keynote address from former Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best.

March and rally

The Heritage Committee’s celebration continues Monday with a march and rally from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It starts at the Everett Memorial Stadium, 3900 Broadway.

As the march finishes at the Carl Gipson Center, attendees will be greeted by music, food, “community resources” and speakers, according to the organization’s website.

‘Reclaim The Dream’

In Edmonds, Lift Every Voice Legacy will hold Martin Luther King Jr. Day events under the theme of “Reclaim The Dream” at the Edmonds Waterfront Center, 220 Railroad Ave.

The center will host a free event for children and families from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The evening event will be held 6-7:30 p.m., with a $15 ticket required for admission. The program will showcase music, spoken word performance and dance, according to the nonprofit’s website.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

‘Day of Service’

Throughout Snohomish County, volunteers can visit one of six local YMCAs to participate in the nonprofit’s “Day of Service.”

At the Everett Family YMCA, 4730 Colby Ave, check-in is at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., volunteers will leave to pick up litter in nearby neighborhoods.

Coffee and donuts will be provided, plus gear to collect the garbage. The cleanup will wrap up at noon.
