MUKILTEO — The Mukilteo City Council recently voted to charge fees for using the new picnic shelters that are being added in the Lighthouse Park renovation project.
People will be able to reserve the shelters for 2009.
The reservation fee for the larger shelter, which will seat up to 50 people, will be $60 per day. Reserving the smaller shelter will cost $35 per day.
People will be able to use the picnic shelters free on days they are not reserved, Mukilteo City Councilwoman Jennifer Gregerson said.
The city also plans to allow people to reserve the field outside the Rosehill Community Center, site of the summertime Mukilteo Farmers Market.
“It makes it more fair,” Gregerson said. “If you wanted to reserve a room, you’d pay a fee, but if you want to show up and hope the play field is open, you could just do it for free.”
Mukilteo’s Lighthouse Park is undergoing several renovations. For a cost of $3 million, the park is being restored with native plants, a new trail, new restrooms and the picnic shelters. A children’s play area, a sand volleyball court, more trees and new parking are also planned.
At least $5 million in changes are planned in coming years as money becomes available.
