LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — A new trial date has been set for the driver accused of killing a man as he dribbled a soccer ball along Highway 101 at Lincoln City on the Oregon coast on the way from Seattle to Brazil.
KGW-TV reported the second trial for 52-year-old Scott Von Hiatt of Neskowin is set for July 8. His first trial last month in Lincoln County ended in a hung jury.
Hiatt was charged with criminally negligent homicide in the May 14 death of 42-year-old Richard Swanson. He was struck from behind by a pickup truck.
Swanson started May 1 at the Seattle Space Needle and hoped to dribble a soccer ball to Sao Paulo in time for the 2014 World Cup. He was raising awareness for the One World Futbol charity.
