Chug: National Train Day in Edmonds

The Swamp Creek and Western Railroad Association holds a National Train Day open house, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Edmonds Amtrak Depot, 210 Railroad St. See the model trains move along 400 feet of track through miniature towns and detailed scenery.

Show off: Forklift drivers to compete

Do you have amazing forklift driving skills?

Professional forklift drivers from across the state are invited to demonstrate their skills in regional tryouts in Spokane and Seattle. Top finishers will take part in the statewide Forklift Rodeo in September and earn cash prizes.

The Spokane regional qualifying event is May 20 at the Spokane Central Service Center, 915 N. Nelson St. The Seattle regional tryout is Aug. 19 at the IAM Machinist South Park Main Union Hall, 9125 15th Place S.

Competitors must pass a written exam and forklift inspection before competing in the obstacle course. Participation is limited to the first 30 drivers who register.

Spectators are welcome and there’s no admission charge. Regional events feature music, prize drawings, giveaways and food provided by sponsors.

Teach: Marysville seeks community classes

Marysville Parks, Culture and Recreation seeks independent contract instructors to teach classes for fall 2017 (September through December) in the form of ongoing sessions or short workshops.

Proposed subjects may be in art, crafts, education, workshops, business, special interest, fitness or other topics where you can share your skills and talents with others.

The deadline to submit proposals is 5 p.m. May 31.

Apply: Local groups offer scholarships

The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation will award two $4,000 American Association of University Women scholarships. All higher-education students, female and male, are welcome to apply.

Applicants must live in the Arlington, Stanwood or Camano Island area or be a graduate of Lakewood, Arlington, Stanwood or Lincoln Hill high schools. They also must have completed at least two years of higher education.

The deadline to apply is Monday.

Anyone interested in the field of horticulture, landscaping or landscape design is eligible to apply for the $1,000 Mukilteo Way Garden Club Horticulture Scholarship.

The scholarship is to be used for classes in the horticulture department of Edmonds Community College during the 2017-18 academic year. Graduating high school seniors, adult learners and current horticulture students at EdCC are all eligible to apply.

Applications are at www.mwgc.org or by written request to Mukilteo Way Garden Club, PO Box 1361, Mukilteo, WA 98275. Completed applications must be mailed to the Club’s mailing address and postmarked by May 31.
