Nautical art is planned at Grand

A tribute to the city’s maritime roots will soon be on display at Grand Avenue Park, 1800 Grand Ave.

The Everett City Council this week agreed to pay Vancouver, B.C., artist Glen Anderson $25,000 to lay a large nautical-theme mosaic on a new plaza that will overlook Port Gardner Bay.

The City of Everett Cultural Commission previously recommended the city approve mosaic of a compass rose, world map, waves and other seafaring images.

The artwork will be constructed of pebble, tile and color concrete and will be placed on a plaza overlooking Port Gardner Bay. An artist-designed wrought-iron railing is also planned for the plaza.

Money for the project comes from a percentage of building fees that are set aside for the arts.

In related news, the entire park is being primed for $328,000 in improvements, including new sidewalks, flag poles, park signs, entry pillars and landscape curbing.

Concrete bollards are planned along the edge of Grand Avenue, to prevent cars from veering onto the park’s long lawn.

Schwets Construction Inc. of Sedro-Woolley recently began work on the park, which is expected to be completed in October.
