AHS teens mark last German exchange
Seventeen Arlington High School students recently returned from a four-week, home-stay trip to Germany and the Czech Republic through the German-American Partnership Program.
The trip marked the eighth and final time AHS coordinator Ben Mendro took teenagers to Stuttgart, a city in southwest Germany, where they stayed with host families and attended school at AHS’ partner institution, the Evangelische Mörike Gymnasium. The Mörike students have visited Arlington eight times, the final time in fall 2015.
“My colleague in Germany, Klaus Schellhaas, and I had previously agreed that we would discontinue the program after this year’s exchange for personal reasons,” Mendro wrote.
“The exchange has been phenomenally successful, with over 300 German and American students taking part over 16 years,” he added. “This trip was no different, as the eager and enthusiastic group of AHS students, aged 16-18, got a deep cultural experience with their hosts as well as experiencing the majestic historical beauty of the major European cities of Prague and Berlin.”
Geography teacher is going places
Cascade High School teacher Melissa Webster traveled to Washington, D.C., in June after being selected one of 60 teachers to participate in Supreme Court Summer Institute.
In addition to watching the Supreme Court in action, teachers studied Supreme Court cases and learned innovative ways to share their knowledge with students.
Shortly after her return, Webster learned that she was selected by the American Geographical Society as a 2016 AGS Human Geography Teacher Fellow. Webster was one of 50 teachers across the United States who study and teach geography to be selected for the honor.
As a fellow, Webster will attend an all-expenses-paid symposium at Columbia University in New York City in November.
Getchell among ‘most picturesque’ campuses
A lawn maintenance company blogger came up with a list of the “14 Most Picturesque High School Campuses in the U.S.,” and Marysville Getchell High School took the No. 7 spot for its tree-filled surroundings and view of the mountains. Stadium High School in Tacoma took the No. 1 spot. The rankings, which did not come with a list of criteria but largely focuses on campus surroundings, is at www.lawnstarter.com.
