Student art shines light on energy

Snohomish County PUD has given awards to 17 local students in its annual art and photography contests. The winning entries can be seen online at tinyurl.com/PUDart.

Art contest winners, who each created a safety message for the PUD: Callia Park (Forest View Elementary), Ethan Anderson (Sunnycrest Elementary), Edison Ho (Silver Lake Elementary), Dayana Churape (Twin City Elementary), Dhriti Rao (Shelton View Elementary), Ashton Smith (Index Elementary), Brooke Magelsen (Lakewood Middle), Sally Schafer (Harbour Pointe Middle), Addie Johnson (Index Middle), Cassondra Niemela (Centennial Middle), Marianne Doane (Sultan High) and Chloe Keenan (Sultan High).

Winners of the high school “Energy in Action” photography contest: Meghan Lavelle (Lake Stevens), Izabella Williams (Snohomish), Seth Himple (Snohomish), Abigail Iblings (Lake Stevens) and Eva Waltz (Glacier Peak).

National Merit winners

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently released the names of the first group of winners in its National Merit Scholarship Program. More than 1,000 teens nationwide were awarded corporate-sponsored scholarships.

Boeing-funded scholarships went to Michael Bae, Seonghun Cho, Nancy Jong and Wooseok Yi (Kamiak), Samuel Myers (Archbishop Murphy), and Mason Meyer (Glacier Peak).

Teen receives state honors as civic leader

Edmonds-Woodway High School freshman Emma Wansley was one of four students in the state to be recognized with a Daniel J. Evans Civic Education Award from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Wansley was nominated by teacher Sarah Treworgy while attending Alderwood Middle School, where Wansley was an honors student. The award recognizes her civic leadership in her school and community as well as completion of a state “Assessment on Constitutional Issues,” where she received scores of “Excellent.”

Meadowdale juniors honored by Rotary

The Meadowdale High School Junior Student of the Month is a program sponsored by the Rotary Club of Edmonds.

Recent honorees were Andrew Wei (January), Martha Colorado (February) and Michael Fishman (March). They each received a plaque and a gift certificate to Edmonds Bookstore.

Mariner teacher awarded for global focus

Rhonda Marquardt, a teacher at Mariner High School, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from the Institute of International Education and the American Institute for Foreign Study. Marquardt was among 50 educators in 27 states to receive the grant, which encourages teachers to advocate for study abroad programs by exposing students to international experiences. She received the national honor for successfully integrating global perspectives and exchanges into her classroom.

Veteran PE teacher improves each year

Cedar Way Elementary School physical education teacher Henry Shellenberger was named the March Educator of the Month by the Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Club.

Shellenberger has taught at Cedar Way for 36 years. “Every year, he focuses on how to improve his instruction to have greater impact on the kids he serves,” Principal Hawk Cramer said.

Local Phi Kappa Phi inductees

Alyssa Zeigler, of Marysville, and Sam Schelfhout, of Monroe, were recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Zeigler was initiated at Arizona State University; Schelfhout at the University of Texas at Austin.
