LONG BEACH, Calif. – A serial rapist convicted of attacking more than a dozen women in Southern California over a five-year period was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.
Mark Wayne Rathbun was convicted in August in a series of attacks that began in 1997 and continued until his arrest in 2002.
Prosecutors said the 34-year-old drifter climbed into open windows and sneaked through unlocked doors to sexually assault women in the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, as well as the nearby cities of Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach.
He became known as the Belmont Shore rapist.
Superior Court Judge Joan Camparet-Cassani sentenced Rathbun to 1,030 years in prison plus 10 life terms.
