United Way says thanks to donors

United Way of Snohomish County has recognized donors and employers who ran outstanding fundraising campaigns to benefit kids and families in Snohomish County.

Despite a challenging economy and an unemployment rate of more than 10 percent, fall United Way campaigns raised slightly more than the $9.92 million raised in 2008, according to Carl Zapora, president and chief executive of United Way of Snohomish County.

The total amount of money raised will be announced in June.

During an awards celebration Wednesday evening, Kim Buike, a retired Navy captain, was introduced as the leader of the fundraising campaign for 2010.

Nearly 16,000 people made pledges or donations to support 89 programs and 39 organizations funded in part though United Way donations. The programs assist with services such as early learning for children, financial stability, the Volunteer Center, and 211, the county’s social service and volunteer hotline.

“The needs in the community are larger than we’ve seen in most years,” Matt Reinhard, 2009 campaign chairman, said in a statement. “We are grateful for every donor and every volunteer who is improving lives, one dollar and one hour at a time.”

The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound and The Boeing Co., were recognized as the two largest contributors, with gifts of $1.8 million and $800,000 respectively.
