EVERETT — Everett travelers be aware — traffic could slow to a crawl later next weekend.
The closure was initially set for the first weekend of the month, but the transportation department postponed the work Thursday due to rain in the forecast.
Now, northbound I-5 through downtown Everett will be reduced to one lane starting the night of May 10.
The lane reduction will end the morning of May 13. The lane closure is weather-dependent, a state Department of Transportation press release said. Reductions will start past the 41st Street exit. The off-ramp to 41st Street will be the last Everett exit open. The 41st Street on-ramp will be open too.
Northbound off-ramps to Pacific Avenue and Marine View Drive will be closed. On-ramps at Everett Avenue and U.S. 2 will also be closed.
In response, the state Department of Transportation is asking travelers to consider using alternate routes, like Highway 9.
The closure will allow work crews to “replace asphalt with concrete on the right side of the freeway north of Pacific Avenue.”
The work is part of a $123.1 million project to add a carpool lane from Everett to Marysville. That project is also addressing congestion concerns at the interchange of I-5 and Highway 529. The state is adding new ramps and building a roundabout nearby.
Construction on the project is expected to last into spring 2025.
Next week will also see work on another project to repair bridges along Highway 529. Starting on Wednesday, northbound Highway 529 at the Snohomish River Bridge will be reduced to one lane.
