HAVANA — Cuba is celebrating the return of three spies imprisoned in the United States for more than a decade, as well as the fact that one of their wives is expecting a baby in two weeks.

Adriana Perez’s visible pregnancy has been the talk of Cuba since she appeared with her husband Gerardo Hernandez at the island’s parliament this weekend.

A top aide to U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that the lawmaker helped arrange for Perez’s artificial insemination, a procedure carried out in Panama.

He says the gesture helped improve the atmosphere for 18 months of talks leading to Washington and Havana’s move to restore diplomatic ties after more than 50 years.
