Regarding a recent letter to the editor regarding rights regarding abortion and masks and the slogan “My body, my choice,” the writer evidently does not see the hypocrisy of his own statements. The Republicans have for years used the mantra: get big government off our/ your backs. But when it comes to my bedroom and my womb, they want to be right in there regulating the hell out of me. I would call that “telling others how to live their lives.”
Significantly, carrying a fetus to term carries risks to the mother that neither a mask nor a vaccine presents, including death to the mother.
Furthermore, there is a big difference between wearing a mask (and getting a vaccine) and carrying a fetus to term, giving birth, and raising a child. A mask protects the wearer and everyone around them. It is for the public health. Not so carrying a fetus to term.
Likewise, vaccination; it is for the public health, not just the individual who gets it. Historically, governments have had the authority to regulate in times of public health emergencies. It is no different now and is certainly nothing new. Just read about government action during outbreaks of the 1918 flu pandemic, and epidemics of TB and tell me there is currently government overreach. If anything, current government action has been weak and anemic.
