Judy Matheson’s Everett store was a downtown treasure

I’m disappointed in The Herald for not acknowledging the closure of the J. Matheson gift shop, which was located on Colby Avenue in downtown Everett. The owner, Judy Matheson has had her gift shop for more than 50 years. Her business had been supported by the locals, and tourists, and been a mainstay of Everett.

Judy knew most of her customers on a first-name basis. She was always so welcoming, very pleasant and appreciative of those who came in and supported her store. Her store carried items that were special and unique. Judy also supported the community by giving store donations to a variety of organizations. Downtown Colby will no longer be the same with the closure of her store. I wish her the best in her retirement, which she surely deserves, and express my appreciation for the impact and support she’s made to Downtown Everett and the community.

Editor’s note: The closure of Judy Matheson’s business and its importance in the community was indeed featured in The Herald (“After 54 years, in retail, Judy Matheson calls it a career,” The Herald, March 2).
