On The Herald’s Jan. 17 opinion page, columnist Thomas Burke wrote about a subject that is rarely covered in the news, Christian dominionism (‘Old time religion fine, but keep it, government apart,” The Herald, Jan. 17. He points out that 81 percent of evangelicals voted for Trump. He doesn’t make it clear that all evangelicals are not Christian dominionists or Christian nationalists. Evangelicals can be wonderful people who abide by the rules of our democratic society as the No. 1 priority, whereas Christian dominionists put fundamentalism as their first priority. The laws of society can be broken because they are not the first order of importance. Biblical law is.
If by chance you’re interested in this subject, there are numerous resources available to you. Two books that cover the subject well are “The Family” and “C Street” by Jeff Sharlet. Also Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Of the military chaplains, 84 percent are evangelicals and one third of them are nationalist Christians. There are two very good interviews with Weinstein on theAnalysis.news website by Paul Jay that give you details of this movement and connect it to Jan. 6.
