Readers need reporting, facts Herald provides

I have been a reader of a local daily newspaper all of my adult life. Since moving to Everett 42 years ago, I have been a Herald subscriber.

I cannot imagine a town or city of any size without a local newspaper and it is heartbreaking and galling to realize this important source of information is on the brink of extinction. Local newspapers provide the community with information, entertainment and important investigative reporting. We are more and more often overwhelmed with national news, opinion and “journalism” that can barely (sometimes not at all) pass the test of integrity and impartiality. We no longer live in a fact-based news environment, just one in which readers and consumers have become commodities for “news” outlets to increase ratings and clicks.

I am incredibly saddened and angered by the recent layoffs at The Herald. I have had the good fortune to come to know many reporters, columnists and photographers from The Herald over the years. Their professionalism and commitment to expertise are commendable. This is a slap in the face to those at The Herald and a sad day for our community.
